Shear Test Rig

Shear Test Rig

Overview

The Shear Test Rig is designed to measure the bond strength between brake lining material and its carrier in disc brake pads and drum brake shoes, in compliance with IS 15708:2006 standards.
It performs ambient and hot destructive shear tests automatically through a computerized hydraulic system with user-friendly control software.

Key Features

  • Conforms to IS 15708:2006 test standard.

  • Hydraulic load capacity: up to 20 tons (160 bar).

  • Programmable test parameters (load rate, dwell time, and failure detection).

  • Automatic gripping system using pneumatic actuator (0.5 ± 0.15 N/mm²).

  • Real-time data acquisition and analysis through LabVIEW-based software.

  • Graphical & numerical report generation with built-in database storage.

  • Dual safety operation via software control and manual start buttons.

Applications

  • Disc brake pad shear testing

  • Drum brake shoe shear testing

  • Hot bond destructive test at elevated temperatures (200–300 °C)

  • R&D, quality assurance, and OEM brake material evaluation

System Description

  • The rig includes a main MS fabricated frame with precision fixtures for disc or drum brake assemblies.

  • A hydraulic actuator applies shear load via a movable ram integrated with a 20T load cell.

  • Electro-hydraulic proportional valve controls the load rate (4500 ± 1500 N/s).

  • Hydraulic and pneumatic subsystems ensure controlled face and shear loading.

  • All operations are monitored and logged through PC-based software.

Hot Destructive Shear Test

  • Test sample heated to 200 °C ± 5 °C (drum shoes) or 300 °C ± 5 °C (disc pads).

  • Tested within 1 minute of reaching temperature to assess bond strength at high heat.
